White-breasted Waterhen-(Amaurornis phoenicurus)
Family-Rallidae
Size: 32 cm
The White-breasted waterhen is characteristic of freshwater ponds and marshes, but it often wanders into the mangroves where its distinct croaking calls may be heard. Its chicks, however, are black in colour. Breeds during rainy season and nesting season is June to October. The 32 cm long adult bird lay 6-7 eggs and hatch within 19-20 days. They feed on small fishes, seeds, small crabs and insects.
(Adult White-breasted Waterhens have mainly dark grey upperparts and flanks, and a white face, neck and breast. The lower belly and undertail are cinnamon coloured. The body is flattened laterally to allow easier passage through the reeds or undergrowth. They have long toes, a short tail and a yellow bill and legs. Sexes are similar, but immature birds are much duller versions of the adults.-Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-breasted_Waterhen)
